Perusahaan Otomobil Kedua Sdn Bhd (Perodua) reached a major milestone with the launch of its first battery electric vehicle (EV), the QV-E. Priced at RM80,000 (retail price, excluding insurance and battery), the model is a central piece of the national automaker’s mission to lead a sustainable EV ecosystem in Malaysia.
The QV-E, which stands for “Quest for Visionary Electric Vehicle,” is the result of an RM800 million development program. The vehicle is manufactured at Perodua’s state-of-the-art “Smart Mobility Plant” in Selangor. During the launch, Perodua President and Chief Executive Officer, Dato’ Sri Zainal Abidin Ahmad, shared the production roadmap for the new model.
“For now, we are able to produce 500 units a month, but we would be able to offer 3,000 units a month by the third quarter of 2026,” Dato’ Sri Zainal said.
The QV-E is powered by a 52.5kW Lithium Iron Phosphate (LFP) battery, delivering a range of up to 445km (NEDC), depending on driving conditions and style. Beyond its electric performance, the car features advanced safety technologies, most notably the Child Presence Detection (CPD) system. This sensor-based system detects vital signs—including breathing—to alert drivers of children or pets left in the vehicle, even if they are under fabric coverings.
“All the features within the QV-E were created with the latest functionality, advanced safety and comfort in mind based on a detailed study conducted by our Research and Development (R&D) department,” Dato’ Sri Zainal explained. “Ultimately, this model is the outcome of Malaysians coming together to create something uniquely ours, from design to engineering, the QV-E offers a path all of us can benefit from,” Dato’ Sri Zainal said.
The launch aligns with the New Industrial Master Plan 2030, where Perodua was appointed to lead local manufacturers in developing the national EV ecosystem. This development was completed in just 28 months with the support of the Ministry of Investment, Trade and Industry (MITI). Currently, 52 Malaysian companies supply components for the QV-E, with plans to increase this to 70 vendors by 2030 to achieve a localization rate of 70 percent.
“The support given to us by the government has been instrumental in revolutionising the Malaysian EV ecosystem and at the same time placing great attention to quality, reliability and the latest in digital technology,” Dato’ Sri Zainal said.
To address common concerns regarding EV ownership, Perodua is introducing a “Battery as a Service” (BaaS) leasing concept. Under this model, the car’s body is sold separately from the battery, which is leased to the customer.
“This concept is our solution towards reducing owner’s anxiety when owning a battery electric vehicle. By offering this service we will be able to offer a lifetime guarantee on the battery for our customers’ peace of mind,” Dato’ Sri Zainal said.
The QV-E is primarily aimed at middle-income earners and those seeking a secondary or replacement vehicle for daily commutes and weekend travel. It is available in two colors, Ice Blue and Caviar Grey, at selected Perodua outlets nationwide.
