Announcement of KL Festival (KL Fest) 2026

The KL Festival (KL Fest) is returning from May 6 to 31 as a cornerstone of a long-term strategy to revitalize the heart of the city. Organized by Think City and Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL), the initiative aligns with Visit Malaysia 2026 and Kuala Lumpur’s designation as a UNESCO Creative City of Design.

An Economic Intervention Powered by Creativity

More than just a cultural celebration, KL Fest is backed by a RM3 million injection designed to serve as a significant economic intervention. The festival will feature over 80 multidisciplinary events across 26 heritage buildings, public spaces, and streets, totaling more than 700 hours of programming.

With a target of over 100,000 visitors, the event aims to extend footfall beyond traditional business hours and stimulate spending across the retail, transport, and F&B sectors. This year’s theme, “Memory & Tomorrow,” reflects the city’s evolution through heritage and transformation, reinforcing the role of community in shaping a globally competitive city.

Activating The City Center Through Flagship Programming

The festival’s impact is anchored by several flagship programs designed to reactivate urban spaces:

  • Jogeton: A major activation at Dataran Merdeka.

  • Warung Terang: Projection mapping by Filamen that transforms local laneways and streets.

  • Planet KL: A dedicated experience at the River of Life.

  • Public Art Installations: Featured across Downtown KL through the KL Architecture Festival Competition.

  • Cultural Stages: Performance works such as Fragments of Tuah and The Lessons of Silence will take place at key venues like the Chan She Shu Yuen Ancestral Hall and The Godown Arts Centre.

Dato’ Hamdan Abdul Majeed, Managing Director, Think City delivering his speech

According to Dato’ Hamdan Abdul Majeed, Managing Director, Think City “This festival demonstrates how culture can function as a catalytic role in regeneration strategies. Physical upgrades alone do not sustain city centers. Activation, identity and consistent public engagement are critical drivers of investment and commercial activity. KL Fest is structured to reactivate space, increase visitation and create meaningful economic opportunities for local enterprises.”

Global Inspiration and Local Impact

The strategy draws inspiration from global success stories like the Edinburgh Festival Fringe and the Manchester International Festival, both of which generate hundreds of millions in economic contributions. Closer to home, the George Town Festival attracts 250,000 visitors annually.

The inaugural KL Fest has already proven its worth, drawing over 140,000 visitors and supporting more than 800 creative jobs. By offering the majority of programs for free, KL Fest ensures inclusive participation, allowing regeneration efforts to benefit both local businesses and the wider community.
