Since 2019, the team behind the heritage restoration project at Lorong Panggung and Jalan Petaling in Kuala Lumpur – Kwai Chai Hong, has been consistently introduced exciting art installations and activities to transform the area. In March, they have instilled their first installation of 2021 with a new permanent art sculpture (The Lady) by Alice Chang of Lai Lai Art Studio and a traditional fabric-dye installation to celebrate the Chinese culture and heritage.
Drawn from the theme “everlasting beauty”, this new installation pays tribute to the classic Wan Shou Wu Jiang porcelain design, which is commonly found in Chinese homes, as well as a popular Chinese floral design called Bao Xiang Hua. Alice brings Kwai Chai Hong a masterpiece of a sculpture made from thousands of porcelain pieces, bringing new life from what is considered waste.
The sculpture titled “The Lady” sits gracefully at the entrance of Kwai Chai Hong. Visitors are left in awe upon entering the vicinity as they are met with a setup mimicking a traditional fabric-dye factory with colorful textile hanging over bamboo stilts to dry. With the help of some technology and in collaboration with Epson Malaysia, the traditional fabric-dye installation represents old and dying crafts being innovated and transformed into various forms, including art.
Zeen Chang, the managing partner of Bai Chuan Management, said, “At the core, Kwai Chai Hong serves as more than just an attraction spot. We challenge ourselves to recreate the wonders of Chinese culture and heritage and in that process, we strive to bring the best experiences to our visitors near and far. By collaborating with local artists, we were able to work hand-in-hand to create an experience that is uniquely Kwai Chai Hong and we wish to continue this journey and help others to discover the gems of this beautiful and rich culture. At Kwai Chai Hong, we have always incorporated the power of technology and innovation to enhance one’s experience bringing people back in time.”
