Disney+ Hotstar finally reveals their plans for the upcoming lineup of the Pixar Animation Studios’ SparkShorts program. Debuting in September, two new shorts will be introduced – “Twenty Something” from director Aphton Corbin, and “Nona” from director Louis Gonzales. Additionally, a feature-length documentary by Pixar and Supper Club titled “A SparkStory” will also make its way into the platform, bringing an inside look at Pixar’s SparkShorts filmmaking process.
According to Disney+ Hotstar, the SparkShorts filmmakers were given six months to assemble a team and create a short animated film with no rules applied. The outcome of it was that the filmmakers express themselves, adding a personal touch to the stories. Giving these filmmakers an opportunity such as this took them on a rollercoaster of emotions as they stepped into a leadership role and inspired their team.
“I’m proud to see how the short was made better by the team working on it. I’ve never directed before but I feel like my 20+ years in the business really paid off,” says Gonzales.
Corbin added, “The SparkShorts program is the studio’s way of seeing what talented storytellers can do on their own. After working with Pete [Docter] on ‘Soul,’ I caught the studio’s eye as someone who had interesting stories to tell. There is something so beautiful about seeing actual drawings come to life.”
Created using hand-drawn animation, “Twenty Something” tells the story of Gia facing the insecurities of adulting and facing a world everyone is just faking it until they make it. “Nona” on the other hand is a grandmother who spends her days watching her favorite shows. Her 5-year-old granddaughter Renee gets unexpectedly dropped off and is forced to choose between the two. Catch “Twenty Something” on 10 Sept 2021 and “Nona” on 17 Sept 2021.
