Chipt, a Malaysian sustainability startup and winner of the 2024 United Nations Development Programme (UNDP)/ASEAN Blue Innovation Challenge and Yayasan Hasanah Asian School of Business impact grant, is launching ASEAN’s first returnable cup program with partners Iskandar Investment Berhad and Plato Coffee. This initiative addresses single-use cup waste, offering a sustainable solution to the coffee industry.

“We’re thrilled to launch ASEAN’s first returnable cup program. This is a major step towards a more sustainable coffee industry, and we’re excited to partner with Iskandar Investment Berhad and Plato Coffee to make a real difference,” said Dato’ Nick Boden, Founder of Chipt.

“In line with our development of Medini Innopolis, which will feature a Net Zero Central Business District (NZCC); Medini aims to transform the township into a highly self-sustaining city,” highlighted Diyana Mohd Amin, SVP (Head) of Sustainability & ESG at Iskandar Investment Berhad.

Chipt’s QR coded, Radio-Frequency IDentification (RFID)-chipped cups are designed for efficient cleaning, are 100% recyclable, and offset the CO2 of a disposable cup after just 2.6 uses. Customers use a user-friendly app for transactions and returns, earning a free coffee upsize at Plato Coffee with every Chipt cup. Expansion to other coffee shops is planned, with the development of more loyalty package explorations.
