Sunway Square Mall has officially opened its doors, marking a new chapter for community-centric retail within the heart of Sunway City Kuala Lumpur. Designed as a four-level, pet-friendly lifestyle destination spanning 320,000 square feet, the mall serves as the anchor for the broader Sunway Square development. The project reflects a strategic shift toward integrated urban spaces that blend commerce, culture, education, and leisure into a single environment.

Positioned to cater to the daily rhythms of the surrounding township rather than acting as a conventional shopping center, the mall launched with approximately 95 percent of its retail space operational. This high occupancy rate at opening indicates strong tenant confidence and immediate market traction within the district.

“The brand experience continues with Sunway Square Mall as we open it to the public with 95 percent of shops operating,” said HC Chan, CEO of Sunway Malls. “The mall is part of Sunway Square, a visionary development designed to integrate a multifaceted range of spaces, catering to the arts, commerce, education, and business.”

The mall’s tenant mix features over 130 retail outlets selected to meet both lifestyle and utility-driven demands. Anchor tenants include Village Grocer for daily essentials, Tutu Toe Dance Academy for creative education, and BUMP Bouldering for experiential fitness. Other notable additions include the fast-growing lifestyle concept KKV and a 24-hour library by BookXcess. This library, complemented by Kenny Hills Bakers, provides a hybrid space for study and social interaction, specifically tailored to the large population of students and professionals within the Sunway University ecosystem.

Community identity is woven into the mall’s branding through its official mascot, Squarrel. Created by renowned Malaysian comic artist Ernest Ng, the character is designed to embody curiosity and creativity, serving as a unifying symbol of the mall’s people-first philosophy. This narrative is further reinforced by the building’s architecture, which draws inspiration from the upcoming Jeffrey Cheah Performing Arts Centre scheduled to open in 2026. Design features such as Spanish-style steps and a steel arch structure introduce performative elements to the space, while six sculptures by resident artist Infantino Fernandes are positioned throughout the mall to enhance visual engagement.

Accessibility remains a core component of the development, which is integrated into Sunway City Kuala Lumpur’s 15-minute city framework. Visitors can access the Sunway South Quay Lake & Park via bubble lifts, linking the mall directly to outdoor recreational areas like the Squarrel Pet Playground. The mall is also connected to the wider township through pedestrian linkages such as the Canopy Walk and the local Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) system.

To celebrate the launch, the mall has introduced a series of community-focused activities and promotions extending into early 2026. These include spend-and-redeem campaigns, limited-edition merchandise giveaways, and complimentary parking periods to encourage visitation. As part of the expanding Sunway Malls portfolio, this new addition reinforces a broader strategy of developing retail environments that respond to evolving urban lifestyles, serving as a connective platform for the local community.
