Launching its #GumHealthFirst campaign in Malaysia, Systema, an expert in gum protection from Japan, is committed to addressing the prevalent issue of gum disease in the country, with a long-term vision to make a lasting impact on oral health. Through continued collaboration with the Malaysia Society of Periodontology (MSP) and the Ministry of Health Malaysia (MOH), this initiative seeks to raise awareness about the pivotal role healthy gums play in maintaining oral wellness.
During the campaign launch, Dr. Noormi Binti Othman, Principal Director of Oral Health at the Ministry of Health Malaysia, highlighted the alarming prevalence of gum disease in Malaysia and its significant effects on the nation’s oral health landscape. Dr. Noormi shared statistics revealing that a vast majority of Malaysian adults, particularly those aged 35 to 44, face challenges with gum health, with periodontitis affecting a significant portion of the population. She emphasized the integral role of gum health in overall oral well-being, noting that gum disease poses a silent yet widespread threat to society, with far-reaching implications beyond oral health alone.
Oral Care products for children
While many may overlook the importance of gum health, people’s gums serve as crucial protectors against oral bacteria and infections while providing essential support to our teeth. Mr. Tomotaka Oka, Managing Director of Southern Lion, stressed the necessity of prioritizing gum health, recognizing it as the foundation of a confident smile and overall bodily health. Mr. Oka emphasized Systema’s commitment to encouraging Malaysians to prioritize #GumHealthFirst, believing that with sufficient awareness and consistent oral care routines, preventing gum disease is achievable.

Dr. Mohd Faizal Hafez Hidayat, President of the Malaysian Society of Periodontology (MSP), highlighted the risks associated with gum disease, including tooth loss and serious health conditions such as osteoporosis, cardiovascular disease, and diabetes. He stressed the importance of preventive measures in daily oral care routines, such as regular brushing with fluoride toothpaste and daily flossing.
Mobile dental clinic that will tour around Peninsular Malaysia
As part of the campaign, Systema has launched a revamped gum health portal, www.gumhealthcheck.com, allowing Malaysians to assess their gum health digitally and access valuable insights and tools for maintaining optimal gum health. Additionally, a mobile dental clinic will tour Peninsular Malaysia, offering free gum health assessments in collaboration with Universiti Sains Islam Malaysia (USIM) throughout May and June 2024.
